Rotator cuff tears
Rotator cuff tears are a common cause of shoulder pain and weakness, especially for people who surf, swim, lift or work overhead. A clear diagnosis and a structured strength program are the foundation of getting your shoulder back.
Understanding the injury
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their tendons that keep the shoulder stable and help you lift and rotate your arm. Tears can happen suddenly, from a fall or a heavy lift, or develop gradually over time.
Scans don't tell the whole story, and not every tear causes the same problems. That's why we focus on how your shoulder moves, how strong it is and what you need it to do.
Common signs
- Pain lifting your arm overhead or reaching behind your back
- Weakness, or the arm feeling like it gives way
- Pain lying on the affected side at night
- Difficulty paddling, swimming or lifting at the gym
A clear plan, every step
- 01
Assess
A thorough shoulder assessment including strength testing. If you need a scan or a specialist opinion, we'll tell you and help organise it.
- 02
Settle
Calm things down with load management, hands on treatment and exercises you can do at home.
- 03
Strengthen
A progressive strength program for the rotator cuff and the muscles around your shoulder blade. If you've had surgery, rehab follows your surgeon's protocol.
- 04
Return
Build back to overhead work, paddling, swimming or lifting, with testing along the way so you know you're ready.
